How to write cold emails that get up to 70% response rate.
Looking for new mentors/advisors/Investors/customers? If you have to use cold email here is a simple framework.
For years, one of the biggest tools I have used to help me with my personal and business growth has been growing my network with cold and warm emails to super mentors and connectors. Thought leaders in the industry that could help you with strategy, connections, money, etc. They are too busy, and so unless you know them or know someone who knows them, your email has to be very, very, very good.
Here’s how I write to them.
I learnt from this book, The Mom Test, a useful email framework that increased my email open rates from less than 10% to nearly 60%. This ultimately got me that one-hour Zoom meeting or, even better, face-to-face coffee with the biggest names in the space.
I am currently doing an outreach to help with my new distillery business.
The main mistake everyone makes is to sell in the email and forget that the goal of the email is to secure a meeting and hopefully learn more if you are a new business testing an assumption. Never sell in an email. If there is a selling opportunity, it will show up naturally.

Part 1(Vision- show credibility)
“Hey David,
I am the founder of Impact Brixton, a coworking space with 400 businesses in the heart of Brixton that has inherited South London’s only Rum distillery in our building.
Part 2(Framing it dont sell)
We have inherited a beautiful distillery in the heart of Brixton, renovated it in the last few months, and now our members use it as a coworking space. This is not a sales email as I have nothing to sell; I am just keen to ensure we maximise its potential since it’s the only large-scale licensed distillery in south London, and it’s currently idle most of the time.
Part 3 (Show some Weakness)
I have experience as a space operator and minimal drink business experience. I am struggling with activating the space and thinking through new ideas about whether we should launch our in-house limited edition Rum, Gin, Vodka, etc…..
Part 3 (put them on a Pedestal)
Considering your experience with Diageo and the brands you have supported, I would love to show you the space and ask questions about its possibilities.
Part 5(Dont forget to Ask)
Do you have time to meet up, tour the distillery, or jump on Zoom in the next couple of weeks? I know you are super busy, so I would appreciate any time you could give.
Regards
Gerald
People like you are the reason entrepreneurs like me can succeed. Thanks again.
(I always add some Cheese) “
According to a study by Hubspot, cold emails usually get a 1% response rate, but I am getting close to a 60% response rate with this structure. The only more effective thing is getting someone who knows them to send a similar email, which gets it up to 90%.
Whether you are looking for more customers, investors, advisors, or mentors, improve your response rate with this super useful framework from the book The Mom Test.
Hope it helps
Gerald
